The companies called the attack through SolarWinds the largest in history.

The results of an analysis of the hacking of SolarWinds computer systems conducted by Microsoft suggest that the malicious code used in the attack on the SolarWinds supply chain was developed by about a thousand developers. Microsoft president Brad Smith called the incident "the largest and most sophisticated attack the world has ever seen."

"It is probably fair to say that this is the largest and most complex attack that has ever occurred in the world. This is the first use of supply chain disruption tactics against the United States, " CBS News quoted Smith as saying.

According to FireEye CEO Kevin Mandia, the cyberattack was revealed when an attempt at two-factor authentication at their company aroused suspicion.

"A FireEye employee logged in to the system, and our security staff discovered that the user had two phones registered in his name. Experts called this person, and asked if he really registered the second device in the network. The employee replied that he did not do it, " Mandia said.

The discovery of this activity led to further investigations regarding the hacking of SolarWinds and the compromise of Orion software.

As the experts explained, during the investigation, it was revealed that hackers had rewritten a total of 4,032 lines of Orion code, which formed the basis of the cyberattack.
