The world's second-largest laptop manufacturer, Taiwan-based Compal, whose factories produced laptops for Apple, Acer, Lenovo, Dell, Toshiba, HP and Fujitsu, has fallen victim to ransomware. Judging by the screenshot of the ransom note, the cybercrime group DoppelPaymer may be behind the attack.

According to Taiwanese media, the incident was discovered on the morning of Sunday, November 8, and affected about 30% of all Compal computers. When they arrived at work, the company's employees found a notification from the IT Department asking them to check the status of their workstations and save backups of important files on systems that were not affected by the cyber attack. Since Sunday, Compal's IT Department has been reinstalling encrypted systems.

Despite reports in local media, the company's Deputy managing Director, Sinsen Lu, confirmed the hacking to the United News Network, but denied that the failures in its systems were caused by ransomware.

"[Compal] was not blackmailed by hackers, as is rumored, " Sinsen Lu said.

According to the Deputy Director, the incident affected only the company's internal office networks, but not the laptop production lines.
