The computer systems of the largest Indian news Agency Press Trust of India (PTI) were subjected to a large-scale attack using ransomware, which disrupted the operation of servers for several hours. This was reported by the Hindu Business Line newspaper.

The attack by LockBit ransomware operators affected almost all the servers of India's main news Agency. The malware encrypted all data and applications, which led to the termination of news delivery to PTI subscribers. The ransomware demanded a ransom via a message on the computer screen in order to provide the key to decrypt it.

According to the company's representative, PTI's IT engineers worked on a phased restoration of the systems for 11 hours, and no ransom was paid.

Ransomware remains a major problem, especially as such groups are increasingly demonstrating a high level of skill and sophistication. In many cases, ransomware doesn't just encrypt data with malware and demand hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars in bitcoins, but it also threatens to leak stolen confidential corporate files or victims ' personal information if their demands aren't met.

Although ransomware is one of the most well-known forms of cyber attacks, there are very few notifications about these crimes, since many organizations do not contact law enforcement after they have become victims. Several law enforcement agencies across Europe said they had only heard about extortion cases from local media reports.
