A cyberattack by" Russian hackers " on US government resources, first reported in mid-December, affected at least 250 federal agents and businesses

The cyberattack by "Russian hackers" on US government resources, which was first reported in mid-December, affected at least 250 federal agents and businesses, the NYT reports, citing US intelligence sources. According to the publication, the recent series of hacks was more extensive than expected.

According to the latest estimates, this series of hacks lasted since October 2019, and its goals are still not clear to Americans. Experts interviewed by the publication suggested that Moscow thus wants to demonstrate its existing capabilities and shake Washington's confidence in the security of communications used by its federal agencies.

NYT sources noted that Cyber Command and the National Security Agency have implemented "early warning" sensors in foreign networks to detect looming attacks, but they have apparently failed.

The Pentagon, the Treasury Department, the US State Department, as well as the Departments of Homeland Security, Commerce, Energy and the National Nuclear Security Agency were attacked by hackers using SolarWinds software.
