The domains were used to spread disinformation in the interests of the Iranian government.

This week, the FBI seized 92 domain names used illegally by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in disinformation campaigns.

According to the US Department of Justice, the four domains belonged to legal news agencies, but were in fact controlled by the IRGC and were intended to spread Iranian propaganda to US citizens. The remaining 88 domains were targeted at users in Western Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The sites were portrayed as real news resources, but in fact were used by the IRGC to spread disinformation in the interests of the Iranian government.

All 92 domains were used in violation of sanctions against the Iranian government and the IRGC.

The investigation, initiated on the basis of data obtained from Google, became a common work of the FBI and commercial companies, in particular Google, Facebook and Twitter.
