For the second time in several years, the attackers managed to hack the State Department's email servers.

Hackers have stolen thousands of official emails from the US State Department. Although the incident took place last year, it was not reported to the general public. The hack was the second time in six years that hackers allegedly linked to Russia have penetrated the State Department's email servers (the first occurred in 2014).

As sources in the US Congress told Politico, the attackers gained access to the emails of the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs and the Bureau of East Asian Affairs of the State Department. Whether the networks that the hackers penetrated were classified is currently unknown. It is also unclear whether the email theft is part of an attack on the SolarWinds supply chain.

When asked about the hacking, the press service of the State Department answered the following: "The Department takes its responsibility to protect information seriously and constantly takes measures to ensure its protection. For security reasons, we are currently unable to discuss the nature or extent of any alleged cybersecurity incidents."

The theft of State Department emails means that hackers were able to gain access to more US government material than was previously known to the general public. The affected bureaus are working on issues related to US allies, including NATO, as well as European and Indo-Pacific partners.
