APT10 has actively targeted Indian biotech companies Bharat Biotech and Serum Institute of India.
A Chinese hacker group attacked the IT systems of two Indian manufacturers of vaccines against coronavirus infection (COVID-19), used as part of a campaign to immunize residents of the country.
As experts from the information security firm Cyfirma told Reuters, the Chinese hacker group APT10 (also known as Stone Panda) identified problems and vulnerabilities in the IT infrastructure and software supply chain of Indian biotech companies Bharat Biotech and Serum Institute of India (SII).
"The hackers' motivation is to steal intellectual property and gain a competitive advantage over Indian pharmaceutical companies. In the case of the Serum Institute, the criminals discovered a number of public servers containing vulnerabilities, " said Cyfirma CEO Kumar Ritesh.
APT10 has actively targeted SII, which produces the AstraZeneca vaccine for many countries and will soon begin mass production of Novavax vaccines. Representatives of SII and Bharat Biotech declined to comment on the situation. Cyfirma experts reported the problem to the state-run Indian Computer Incident Response Team (CERT), and its specialists confirmed the cyber threat.
