The level of cybercrime in Russia has increased 20-fold over the past seven years and continues to increase. This is reported by TASS with reference to the head of the Department for investigation of cybercrime and crimes in the sphere of high technologies RF IC Constantine Camarda.
The negative trend is also confirmed by the statistics of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation. So, for 11 months of 2020, the number of registered cybercrimes increased by 76% - to 461 thousand. Cybercrime accounts for almost a quarter of all criminal acts committed in the country. Two years earlier, the proportion of such acts was three times less.
Anna Mikhailova, Business Development Manager at Angara Group, attributes this trend to two factors: an increase in the overall level of cyber research and awareness, as well as global digitalization, the pace of which has accelerated significantly during the pandemic. She warns that every year the trend will continue to increase as we move communications to digital.
"On the one hand, we see that many types of interaction of society have turned to online: government and financial services, education, commerce, etc. On the other hand, digital formats are still poorly protected, and have many vulnerabilities for cyber intruders. Those, in turn, have a plenty of tools for hacking, unable to carry out a massive attack for a little money, while remaining unnoticed. This implies the prevalence of cybercrime, the number of which will continue to increase. I wouldn't be surprised if at some point every second crime is committed with the help of IT tools. Information assets have the same value as physical assets. And if we do not neglect the protection of our own property, then the attitude to data should be similar. Information security has become a necessary element not only for organizations, but also for individuals, " she explains.
