An hackers, according to CNN, after a large-scale cyber breach in the United States, tried to attack specialists who were supposed to be among the first to respond to the attack.

For months, while U.S. officials were unaware of a cyberattack on U.S. government agencies through the SolarWinds software, Russian hackers identified several key analysts at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) who were expected to be among the first to respond to the discovery of the hack. After that, hackers tried to gain access to their email, CNN reports, citing two sources.

While it is unclear whether any of these accounts were compromised, the sources say that the fact that the hackers knew which analysts at the DHS should be contacted suggests that they have a much deeper understanding of the U.S. cyber defense system than previously known.

The hackers were able to track in real time when officials in the US identified the attack, and this allowed them to " adapt their actions and remain undetected for as long as possible. Former employee of the US National Security Agency (NSA) and CNN military analyst Cedric Layton advises the staff of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to "completely update the system of all defensive cyber operations."

Recall that the attack through SolarWinds resulted in the hacking of hundreds of objects of federal and regional infrastructure of the United States, including ministries (State Department, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Energy) and enterprises.
