To get into the App Store, the attackers misled Apple by describing their program as a means to encrypt files.
Users lost at least $1.6 million due to a fraudulent service masquerading as the Trezor hardware wallet application.
One of the victims, Phillipe Christodoulou, found an app in the App Store named "Trezor". After he entered his balance verification details, all of his bitcoins were stolen. Christodoulou lost 17.1 PTS.
The analytical company Sensor Tower claims that the app was available in the App Store at least from January 22 to February 3 and could be downloaded about a thousand times. Experts from the British company Coinfirm, which specializes in the regulation of cryptocurrencies, noted that at least five people could become victims of fraud, and the total damage exceeded $1.6 million.
Apple explained that initially, scammers send other services for verification, and after adding them to the app store, they turn them into phishing services. Initially, the fake Trezor program was positioned as a cryptographic service for encrypting files and storing passwords, not related to cryptocurrencies.
Google said it was aware of two fake Trezor apps appearing on the Google Play store; the company has already removed both.
